Treylon knew what the mark was. Not a bruise or a birthmark. It was the sign Rosalie was—or could be—his fated mate. Such things were rare on Ardanna but not unheard of. It was perfectly possible for a couple to have a loving and long relationship and even marriage without any indication of being fated mates. His parents were a perfect example. But for those whom all the markers and attributes lined up perfectly with the help of the gods, finding a fated mate was an incredible gift.

As he continued through the night making love to his beautiful companion, he managed to push aside all concerns about the mark but in the morning, after a long session of sex in the shower, followed by breakfast, he couldn’t escape the truth any longer. While Rosalie was primping and getting herself ready for the day ahead, he sat in the living room and pondered. He was falling head over heels in love with her and guessed from things she said and endearments she uttered in the throes of passion she felt the same.

With a curse he rose and went outside on the balcony, gripping the railing so tightly his knuckles whitened. But he wasn’t just any Ardannan. He was the crown prince and had a duty to his people. Could he marry for love? And would it be fair to Rosalie to bring her into the royal family, to expose her to so much attention, some of which would be bound to be negative. He’d protect and defend her of course but was she strong enough to handle it? Never mind what his family would say about him marrying a high school dropout waitress/daycare worker from Old Earth. Officially the Ardannan policy was to intermarry with humans but he was sure his parents meant for him to bring home a woman more like the lawyer or the doctor in his friends’ circle of matches. Rosalie had a wealth of common sense and street smarts, as well as obviously being highly intelligent. She’d bring her own set of attributes to the job of being his wife.

Trey out of all his people had actually chosen his own match for the week. IDA had done their due diligence and run their algorithm of course and Delain had presented him with five candidates. Trey remembered with amusement he’d barely looked at the other four, flicking their holos out of existence on the desk. “Her. I’ll take this one.” Afterwards he couldn’t have explained exactly why Rosalie had stood out to him so markedly but she did. He hadn’t even scanned her file until later.

Oh you are so screwed.

Because he was in love with her and couldn’t imagine letting her go.

But that was the man talking and part of him had to be the future ruler and not rush into a decision. Right now he hated the necessity to pause and be deliberate but billions of Ardannans were going to depend on him and his choices, including the selection of a queen.
